Children of Eden

  • Ivy Arts Centre University of Surrey Guildford, GU2 7XH United Kingdom (map)

Children of Eden is a musical by Stephen Schwartz (Wicked) and John Caird (Les Miserables, Spirited Away), that explores the timeless themes of family, generational conflict, and the complexities of human nature. Inspired by the biblical story of Genesis, the musical delves into the universal struggles between parents and children, focusing on the emotions and relationships that shape our lives.

The story centres on the dynamic between parents and their children as they navigate love, mistakes, and the consequences of their actions. At the heart of the musical is the conflict between freedom and responsibility, as characters make choices that define their futures and the future of those they love. As the generations move forward, each character must confront their own desires, flaws, and the impact of their decisions on their families.

Children of Eden blends powerful music and poignant storytelling to reflect on the challenges of parenthood, the pain of letting go, and the hope for understanding and reconciliation across generations and races. It highlights the emotional journey of finding one's place in the world while struggling with the expectations and legacies of the past.

Children of Eden is performed by the MA and MFA1 Musical Theatre students, an international cast at GSA. Countries represented on stage include China, Holland, Luxemburg, Germany, Ireland, USA, Canada and Australia.
